The Digital Economy Network is pleased to launch the preliminary details of the 2019 Digital Economy Summer School: The Interdisciplinary Digital Culture and Society Conference (DISCo), which will be held on 9-12 July 2019 in the Jubilee Conference Centre at the University of Nottingham. Annual DE Summer Schools have taken place since 2010 and are aimed at Digital Economy PhD/EngD/CDT students and Early Career Researchers.

The DE Summer School and DISCo 2019 will feature three main tracksDigital Culture, Digital Society and Digital Futures.

Key information:

  • Venue: De Vere Jubilee Conference CentreUniversity of Nottingham, Jubilee Campus, Nottingham, NG7 2TU.
  • Confirmed dates: Tuesday 9 July (PM) – Friday 12 July 2019; duration 3 days.
  • Times: The event will start at approximately 2pm on Tuesday 9 July and finish by 1pm on Friday 12 July 2019.

Format and content:

  • Keynote talks aligned to the three conference tracks – Digital Culture, Digital Society and Digital Futures.
  • One day of workshops and masterclasses (full or half day can be considered)
  • Content on research in play and the importance of ‘play’ and wellbeing in research.
  • Poster exhibition and welcoming networking reception (poster abstract submission required)
  • Short and long paper presentations (via a peer-reviewed submission process)

Call for submissions:

The organisers will issue a call for submissions for DISCo, and the preliminary details of the process as follows:

Submissions will be peer reviewed and will be over two stages; the first stage will be 500 word abstract, following by an invitation for a full submissions for:

  • One or half-day workshops
  • Short paper: Extended abstract, 2 pages (1000 words) > Short presentation
  • Long paper: Maximum paper length 4000 words (excl. references) > long presentation
  • Posters: (abstract + poster) – Additional posters could also be considered for all submissions.

Call for support:

In order to ensure that DISCo is a highly valuable, beneficial, relevant and inclusive experience for all delegates and followers, the organisers are looking for vital support from the across the Network in the following areas:

  • Event delivery and logistics
  • Academic peer review of conference submissions
  • Digital Economy CDT/PhD students and staff to be advocates of the event, to be the ‘voice’ of their Centre, to help shape conference content and spread the word!
  • Event sponsorship – identifying potential opportunities, referrals, securing.

Digital Economy Summer School 2018: Inspire, Programme, Develop

Summer School Venue: The Italian Villa, Compton Acres, Poole (Near Bournemouth), Dorset, BH13 7ES

Start time:  The Summer School programme will start with a networking/social evening with a BBQ, drinks and nibbles at Urban Reef Seafront Restaurant and Beach Bar in Bournemouth at 7.00pm on Sunday 1 July .

Finish time: The event will close at  5.00pm on Tuesday 3 July 2018.

The Digital Economy Summer School 2018 for DEN CDT Students will be hosted by the EPSRC Centre for Digital Entertainment of Bournemouth University and the University of Bath.

Overnight accommodation (single occupancy, bed and breakfast) for the nights of 1 & 2 July 2018 has been organised for attendees at the Ramada Encore Hotel in central Bournemouth, which is located within walking distance of Bournemouth Train Station.  Coach transport will be arranged by the organisers to take delegates to and from the hotel to the Summer School venue.
